On Friday evening, Yvo and I was sat on the sofa watching the England friendly against Spain and he was systematically checking his phone for updates on the Holland/Wales game. He suddenly went silent and was just staring at his phone, “There’s been explosions in Paris”. This is the first terrorist attack to happen since Nora’s birth and I laid in bed last night and just thought about the world my daughter is about to grow up with. To put things into perspective for me, I wrote an ‘open letter’ to my daughter about the things I want her to remember when things like this happen.
To My Daughter
I have a new nightmare, it’s saying goodbye to you and knowing I won’t see you again. No parent should be the one to say goodbye, that is not how life should work. It is just not right. And that is exactly what parents in Paris are having to do, the world is still reeling after the aftermath as the names of the dead are revealed. I’m praying for you Paris, I’m praying for those Mummies and Daddies that are desperately holding on to hope that their son or daughter is still out there safe and still alive.
This morning my angel, I soothed you to sleep at 5am and I held you and watched you sleep thanking God that we were here and for all the blessings in our lives. You’re three months old, and I’m so thankful that you don’t know what’s going on and you can’t ask me questions about this because right now I don’t think I would have the answers for you.
But I want you to remember the following, I don’t know what kind of world you’re going to grow up in. The bad guys aren’t only on Saturday morning cartoons anymore, they are a daily occurrence and I don’t think they’re going away. I want you to remember what I write because it’s the only way we won’t let the bad guys win.
The bad guys want you to be scared, they don’t want people getting on with their everyday lives, standing up against them and their regimes. Be brave my darling and don’t let them destroy your spirit that’s exactly what they’re trying to do. Hold your head high and don’t let fear rule your life.
The bag guys are the minority, do not judge a majority on the actions of a few. Just because someone claims they are doing something in the name of someone, please do not believe them. These people are extremists and nobody agrees with what they’re doing. All religions are built on similar foundations, they teach peace and to love thy neighbour and that’s exactly what I want you to do. No God would be proud of these people, remember that.
The bad guys want you to think the world is an ugly and scary place, yes people can be cruel and barbaric but the world my darling is beautiful. And it is your prerogative to go and explore it, don’t let the bad guys tell you different. The world is your oyster my darling, don’t let them tell you different.
You have given me a whole new perspective on life and I will do everything to keep you safe and we will stand with those who are suffering and do everything we can.
